Let me tell you a bit about me, my qualifications and my approach to counselling -

Hello. My name is Lyle.  Over my 30 years as a counsellor/psychotherapist, I have been constantly amazed and excited about the changes that can occur as I sit with individuals and couples.  I work psychodynamically and holistically which has me ask lots of questions and delve into your history (joint or individual) to get a total view of what makes you you.

Counselling will sometimes leave you feeling a bit vulnerable and this is normal and to be expected.  But we will work at your pace and you will be in complete control.  I will challenge you but I will also use my curiosity about what makes you you. My wisdom, empathy, humour and experience will be utilised, to help you find your path.

You may complete a session feeling worse and with more questions than answers because we, together, have been stirring things up a bit.  This is how positive change happens. Staying with your current thoughts and feelings will not create the change you are longing for but you know yourself better than anyone - you have the answers if you are brave enough to ask the questions.

Symptoms you come into counselling wanting help with could be -

- Anxiety

- Lack of direction

- Loss (of job, health, relationships, etc)

- Relationship worries

- Parenting worries

- Grief

- Trauma (current or historical)

- Generalised melancholy (sadness)

- Many, many other issues not mentioned here.

COUNSELLING WITH INDIVIDUALS (men and women)

As you read the above list of qualifications I hold, it may seem a bit overwhelming - will I utilise everything on the list?  No, not necessarily.  These are just 'the tools in my tool box'.  As I get to know you, it will become clear which type of therapy will best get you the results and change you want/need. Sometimes we will work quickly and at other times we will work at a slower pace.  It is not prescriptive.  Counselling, apart from being research and theory based, is actually a very creative process - thinking outside the box and being forever curious will give us the answers about the way forward.

I have worked with individuals from all works of life and all ages and stages.  The right time to start counselling/psychotherapy is the time you start to ask yourself questions like 'am I the best version of myself'? Or, 'why do I feel a bit out of whack?' It's hard to answer these questions on your own.  Hence, your path to counselling/psychotherapy begins.  Be brave.  You won't regret a minute of it.

COUNSELLING WITH COUPLES

Relationship counselling can often be confronting and very dynamic, simply because it is involving three components - the two of you plus the relationship.  As individuals, each of you brings into the 'relationship', your personal history before the two of you even met - the way you were parented, previous relationships etc.

Is the relationship having difficulties with trust and/or fidelity?  Is one of you (or both) feeling a lack of connection that you once had with one another?  Are you new parents trying to navigate all that this means?  Have changes in lifestyle, work, family, health, had one or other of you feel unsure of the way forward together?  Or, 'why do we just seem to disagree about everything we once held dear'?

Maybe relationship counselling for the two of you won't be about helping you find a way forward together.  Maybe it is about how to part ways in a respectful, forgiving and calm way.  It's a journey we will take together.
